Where to pay tribute to our war heroes
Bath will remember its war dead next week with a series of events around the city
Due to continuing health and safety concerns, everyone is encouraged to wear a face covering and to observe social distancing.
On Sunday (November 7), the Mayor of Bath, Councillor June Player, will lay the first cross on behalf of the people of the city at the Royal British Legion’s Dedication of the Field of Remembrance at the Abbey Churchyard at 2pm.
The RBL representative Major Roger Evans (Rtd) will lay the only wreath to mark the dedication.
On Armistice Day, Thursday (November 11), there will be a two-minute silence at 11am – incorporated into a short Act of Remembrance at the Abbey Churchyard attended by the mayor.
A bugler will mark the start and finish of the silence to remember those who lost their lives in the service of their country.
Other ceremonies being held around the city on November 11 include:
Bath United Services Association’s Wreath Laying Ceremony at 11am at the War Memorial, Firs Field, Combe Down, where Deputy Mayor Councillor Dr Yukteshwar Kumar will lay a wreath;
War Memorial, Royal Victoria Park at 11am – a short service will be led by the Rector at St Michael’s Church (Without) attended by immediate past mayor Councillor Manda Rigby;
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Bereavement Service – act of Remembrance and wreath
laying ceremony at 11am at the Cross of Remembrance, Haycombe Cemetery, Whiteway Road. Past mayor Councillor Paul Crossley will lay a wreath;
Twerton wreath laying ceremony at 11am at the War Memorial, High Street, Twerton. Past mayor Councillor Tim Ball will lay a wreath;
On Sunday, November 14 the Royal British Legion wreath laying ceremony will take place at the City’s War Memorial, Royal Victoria
Park (off Queen’s Parade Place) at 11am. The Mayor, Councillor June Player will lay the first wreath.
St Bartholomew’s Church wreath laying ceremony at 11am will take place at the Memorial Garden, Shaftesbury Road (opposite Co-op). Past Mayor Councillor Shaun Stephenson-mcgall will lay a wreath.
Weston & Newbridge wreath laying ceremony at 11am. Past mayor Honorary Alderman Colin Barrett will lay a wreath.
At 2.30pm the Royal British Legion Remembrance Sunday Parade will take place outside the Guildhall with the march past and salute taking followed by a civic procession, including visiting dignitaries, to Bath Abbey for the Remembrance Service at 3pm
A limited number of free tickets for the service can be obtained from the Poppy Depot at 27 Walcot Street.
