The Midnight Bell

New Adventures World Premiere

tour of Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell is set to visit the Theatre Royal from Tuesday 23rd to Saturday 27th November. Exploring the under-belly of 1930s London life where ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and bars of fogbound Soho and Fitzrovia. World famous choreographer and master storyteller Matthew Bourne takes audiences inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption. A dance theatre event not to be missed, Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell is inspired by the great English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under

The Sky, Hangover Square) who created some of the most authentic fiction of his era; stories borne out of years of social interactions with the working man and woman at his favourite location - the London Pub.

SIX

At the end of the month, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’s smash hit musical about Henry VIII’S wives, SIX, is back at the Theatre Royal by popular demand after enjoying sell out runs in the West End, on UK tour, at Sydney Opera House and on Broadway, where it returns this autumn.

From Tudor queens to pop princesses, SIX sees the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their own personal tales, remixing 500 years of historical heartbreak into a celebration of 21st century girl power backed by the show’s allfemale band, The Ladies in Waiting.

Returning to Bath for two weeks from Monday 29th November to

Saturday 11th December, tickets for this international phenomenon with its spectacularly successful sound-track, were selling fast. Tickets for all performances are on sale at the Theatre Royal Bath Box Office on 01225 448844 and online at www. theatreroyal.org.uk

Ustinov Studio Blue/orange

A new staging of the multi awardwinning drama Blue/orange has opened at Bath’s Ustinov Studio, where it runs until Saturday 13th November, starring Giles Terera (winner of the Olivier Award for Hamilton in the West End) as Robert, Michael Balogun (Death Of England, National Theatre) as Christopher and Ralph Davis (The Open House, Bath’s Ustinov Studio) as Bruce, directed by James Dacre.

In a London psychiatric hospital, a mysterious patient wants out. The problem is that, to him, oranges are bright blue and Muhammed Ali is a whole lot more than just a boxer.

As his doctor and senior consultant debate whether to section or release him, an extraordinary new claim causes them to become more and more divided in their diagnosis.

Their power struggle escalates into a startling and provocative exploration of power and privilege, revealing uncomfortable truths about all three men.

Blue/orange won the Olivier, Critics’ Circle and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Play in 2001.

Twenty years after Joe Penhall’s (Mindhunter, The Road, Enduring Love) razor-sharp satire premiered, he collaborates on this new production shining new light upon this incendiary interrogation of power and privilege in modern Britain.

Juliet & Romeo

From Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th November, Lost Dog make a welcome return to the Ustinov Studio to stage Juliet & Romeo.

Revealing the “true story” of Romeo and Juliet, it turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding; they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well they lived at least.

With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy, this duet takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity in a show directed by Olivier Award nominated Ben Duke which visits Bath hot on the heels of the company’s recent lauded visit with Paradise Lost.

Footfalls & Rockaby

At the end of the month, BAFTA award-winning Dame Siân Phillips (I, Claudius, Under Milk Wood) and Charlotte Emmerson (Food of Love) are set to star in an unmissable double bill of rarely performed gems by Samuel Beckett, Footfalls & Rockaby, which tours to the Ustinov Studio from Wednesday 24th November to Saturday

4th December.

A rocking chair creaks. Footsteps echo down a corridor, tracing and retracing the same path. An old woman hears a voice from beyond – a voice that sounds eerily like her own.

In this pair of miniature masterpieces directed by Richard Beecham, Beckett explores his obsessions with age, memory and the passing of time.

Tickets for all performances at the Ustinov Studio are on sale at the Theatre Royal Bath Box Office on 01225 448844 and online at www. theatreroyal.org.uk/ustinov.

The Egg

Josephine

Josephine, a brand new play about the iconic entertainer, spy and civil rights activist, Josephine Baker, will be staged at The Egg theatre from

Friday 5th November to Monday 8th November. Using original music, dancing from the Harlem Renaissance and a hatful of historical figures, Josephine follows one woman’s incredible journey from the oppressive slums of St Louis to the bright lights of Paris and beyond.

Co-produced by The Egg, Josephine tours to Bath as one of more than 25 venues nationwide and is recommended for everyone over the age of 7.

Performer, campaigner, spy and mother to the multicultural “Rainbow Tribe”, Josephine Baker broke the mould during her lifetime to become a 20th century icon.

But almost 50 years after her death, Café Josephine, a down-atheel New York eatery dedicated to her memory, faces closure. Nobody remembers Josephine, who she was or what she did.

Co-owners Jack and Marie and former Rainbow Tribe members are determined to turn the business around but have wildly different opinions on how to do it.

That is until a knock at the door, an unexpected visitor and a tumble back through their family history that some would prefer forgotten...

The cast for Josephine are Ebony Feare as Josephine, Sadi Masego as Marie and Daniel Kofi Wealthyland as Jack, directed by Holm Theatre’s Jesse Briton.

In Josephine, writers Leona Allen and Jesse Briton have embraced all aspects of Josephine Baker’s extraordinary and at times controversial life in a bid to artistically address anti-racism and diversity training in schools.

Josephine tours to The Egg in the month that Josephine Baker will become the first Black woman to be entered into France’s hallowed Panthéon mausoleum, a memorial in Paris for great national figures in French history from the world of

politics, culture and science.

Puss in Boots

On Saturday 13th November, Lyngo Theatre make a welcome return to The Egg to stage Puss in Boots starring Patrick Lynch, inset, from Cbeebies, with performances at 11.30am and 3pm. Would you trust a talking cat? You never know, he might turn you from a pauper to a prince just like the hero of this story, brought to vivid life on an incredible sloping stage. Using smoke and mirrors and hidden trapdoors, audiences will see how this sure-footed feline fools both the King and the Ogre to put his master at the top.

With a host of puppets, a working windmill and an avalanche of fruit and nuts, this classic furry tale is recommended for audiences over the age of 4.

Tickets for performances at The Egg are on sale at the Theatre Royal Box Office on 01225 448844, The Egg on 01225 823 409 and online at www. theatreroyal.org.uk/whats-on.
