Stars perform plays by Beckett

An unmissable double bill of short plays by Samuel Beckett starring Siân Phillips and Charlotte Emmerson comes to Bath’s Ustinov Studio from Wednesday, November 24 to Saturday, December 4, direct from London’s Jermyn Street Theatre.

Footfalls and Rockaby see star of stage and screen Phillips reunited with the work of the great Irish playwright whom she met in 1966 when he directed her in his first work for television, Eh Joe. The double bill sees the 45th anniversar­y staging of Footfalls and the 40th anniversar­y production of Rockaby.

In a career spanning eight decades, Phillips’ many memorable screen credits range from her Bafta-win- ning role in the BBC’S adaptation of I, Claudius in 1976 and the musical film Goodbye, Mr Chips in 1969 to David Lynch’s Dune in 1984.

More recently, she has played guest roles in New Tricks, Under Milk Wood, Casualty, Inspector Lewis, and the TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s detective novels Strike.

Her prestigiou­s stage career has seen her nominated for Olivier Awards for Pal Joey in 1980/1981, A Little Night Music in 1996, Cabaret in 2013, and the title role in Marlene in 1999, a production which toured to the Theatre Royal in 1997.

She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to drama.

Charlotte Emmerson’s television credits include the BBC series Love, Lies and Records, Casualty 1909, Doctors, and Silent Witness. Her theatre credits include The Postman Always Rings Twice at West Yorkshire Playhouse and in the West End. She has previously performed at the Theatre Royal Bath in The Good Hope in 2002, Our Song in 2003 and Gaslight in 2019.
