City’s ‘amazing response’ for Afghan families settled here

- Wpa/getty

We all know what a great community Bath is, that is why it is such a great place to live.

Although a city, there is a real village feel to Bath. Everyone knows everyone and it is impossible to go into town without bumping into a friend or someone you know.

Good to know then we are also a very generous city.

The recent crisis in Afghanistan has highlighted once again the problems refugees can have when moving to a different country, a different city, miles from all the things and people you know.

Bath Welcomes Refugees (BWR) is a wonderful organisation in Bath, they find homes for people coming from countries in crisis, they find furniture, clothing, necessary goods for families and people faced with this huge upheaval in their lives.

The charity has this week reported some very good news.

The people of Bath have been so generous with donations of food, clothing, toiletries and other goods that both the BWR charity and Bath and North East Somerset Council report they have been inundated with goodwill for the Afghan families recently arrived to start a new life in Bath.

It is wonderful to think our city and our community is so generous.

Fundraising events have been really well supported and donation points for food and goods around the city have been overwhelming.

Events continue around the city, with a jumble sale on Saturday, December 18.

All information about this and other events are on the Bath Welcomes Refugees website.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “The donations team would like to say a massive thank you to the huge number of people from across B&NES who took the time to purchase and donate store cupboard items.

“It provides a strong message to the families arriving to find their cupboards full through your goodwill.

“What an amazing response from our generous community.”

The continuing generosity of our city is what great organisations like BWR depend on for the crucial work they do in our community.
