Tony to retire after 21 years
A popular sandwich trader is selling his business in Bath.
Tony Pinto has run Intermezzo Express on Barton Street for 21 years but said it was time for him to retire.
He will keep on his Trowbridge shop, but hungry workers around Queen Square will no longer see Tony on their lunch hour.
The local man said: “I’ve got to that age in life now where it’s time to retire.
“It’s been good - I’ll be sorry to see it go and I’m bound to miss it, after 21 years. A lot of my customers I’ve been serving all that time.
“A lot of the offices around the square have been here for 20 or 30-odd years and I’ve got to know people by name.
But even when the workers were locked down at home, Tony managed to make ends meet by doing takeaways whenever he was allowed.
He said: “Financially we’ve had a really good year, but now I need to pass it on to someone who is It-savvy.
“You need to be up to date with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and all these kind of accounts, where you make a sandwich, take a picture and put it online.
“Whether it stays the same, I don’t know, but I would like to think it would because it has done me well and I’m sure it will do somebody else well over the next 20 years.”
Intermezzo Express is one of just a
few Bath eateries with a five-star rating on Tripadvisor - and it’s easy to see why.
One reviewer, writing in September this year, said: “Hands down, best sandwich in Bath. Great service, reasonable price, convenient location. What more can you ask for?”
Another, who visited in August, wrote: “Understated yet fabulous place with brilliant service and a huge selection. Amazingly it’s 2 minutes’ walk from The Circus (probably the most expensive part of Bath), but very reasonably priced.”
