Squad’s triumphant return
Baskervilles Gymnastics’ Girl’s Squad returned to competition at the West Country League Championships held at Wiltshire School of Gymnastics.
The A League Team stormed to victory coming in first place on beam and floor and silver on vault and bar. The team’s consistent performance landed them a hardearned silver overall. The team was made up of athletes Beth Turner, Willow Thomas, Phoebe Mitchell, Grace Witcher, Olive Courtneybye, Rosie Dobson, Hettie-jean Wilson-worgan.
Some highlights of the team’s performance include Olive claiming first on beam closely followed by her teammates Beth and Phoebe sharing second. Furthermore, Beth and Willow excelled on the floor finding themselves in joint silver position.
The B League Team stepped up since the last time they competed, with most athletes competing in A League prior to Covid-19 lockdowns. They performed well and secured third on both floor and beam.
The team, made up of athletes Isabelle Lloyd, Matilda Willingham, Zara Whetherly, Sophie Napp, Lucy Edwards and Phoebe Lewis, finished in a respectable fourth overall.
Some highlights of the team performance included Matilda beating every gymnast in the competition on beam, as well as putting out a fantastic floor performance coming in fourth. Isabelle came in just behind Matilda with a brilliant sixth on floor.
Girl’s Squad coach Fran Baskerville said: “I am so proud of the girl’s performances over the weekend, after more than a year of lockdowns and zoom training it was amazing to watch the girls return to the competition floor so confidently and put out so many phenomenal routines.”
Baskerville thanked coaches Fran, Rachel Down and Kiera Williams for all of their hard work leading up to the competition and Amy Guerrini for judging on the day. The squad are looking forward to getting back in the gym and working towards their next competition taking place in February 2022.
