Gold crowns return of Rich
Emma Rich has been crowned British Masters Athletics Champion after securing gold in the women’s (45) javelin.
The High Littleton resident used to compete in the sport when she was younger but enjoyed a triumphant return on her first time throwing the javelin in over 20 years.
Rich, who works for the health department at the University of Bath, grew up in Somerset and won the English School Girls National Championships whilst competing for the county. She remained one of the top British junior throwers for a number of years.
When she transitioned to senior athletics, Rich suffered an elbow and back injury which put a stop to competing. At the time, Rich also graduated with a first class hons degree at Loughborough University before going on to complete her doctorate in the school of sport and exercise sciences.
Having worked as a senior lecturer for a number of years, Rich returned to the South West in 2010 to work for the University of Bath, where she is now a professor in physical activity and health pedagogy.
Looking at her return to sport, Rich said: “I suppose part of giving sport a go again is partly related to a mental health story. A few years ago I had to take some time out from work to care for my mum through a terminal illness (breast cancer and then sinus cancer).
“She sadly passed away in 2020 and I suffered a number of other losses around then. I experienced complex grief, which was very difficult, and some PTSD symptoms. Getting back into sport has been really important in helping me through that grief and the trauma of being a carer for a loved one through a terminal illness.
“I also volunteer at a local dogs home - Mutts with Friends - getting back into walking, being around animals and reconnecting with people was really important. A wonderful charity.
“I also set up a home gym in my garage to start reconditioning and really enjoy working out. So, giving athletics a go this year was a massive leap of faith and part of my recovery journey - a reminder that it’s never too late to give things a try.”
The British Masters Athletics Championships was held in Derby over three days, with Rich winning the Women’s (45+) Javelin.
Rich added: “It’s a wonderful event - this opened the door for me for new challenges, friendships and to be truly inspired by the incredible achievements of fellow athletes.
“The event is open to anyone over
35, but there are competitors in their 80s breaking British records.
“As British champion, I can enter and represent GB in the European and World Masters Championships next year, so hoping to give that a go.”
