2nd hole-in-one is 8th wonder

-

Local golfer Scott Pillinger created a little bit of history after scoring a second career hole-in-one on the same hole he managed his first.

Pillinger was a member of Lansdown Golf Club when he managed a hole-in-one on the 8th. Due to other commitments, Pillinger decided to retire from golf before returning to the sport - and Lansdown - again after Covid. When playing last week with a friend, Pillinger managed the unthinkable scoring a second hole-in-one on the 8th.

Pillinger said: “It was just a usual Thursday after work game with my best buddy Anand. We haven’t played golf together for months so it was nice to get out again with each other.

“The weather on Thursday was beautiful and for a nice change there was no wind up on Lansdown. My round was fairly average, nothing special to report. Each time I stand on the 8th tee, I always think about the hole-in-one I had, it brings back great memories for me. On this round we were off the yellows with the pin cut on the front of the green. From memory it was 165/170ish, so a good 7 iron for me.

“My buddy had teed off before me, knocked it pin high with 7 so I was confident I had the right club. I put a nice easy swing on it and watched the ball tower into the sky slightly left of the pin.

“As the ball lost its power and started to drop out of the sky it started moving very slightly to the right, getting ever closer to the line of flag. The ball landed softly on the green short of the hole, to which my buddy was yelling ‘get in the hole.’ One, bounce, two bounces and then it disappeared into the hole.

“It was great to see the ball drop in the hole as previously due to the hole position I wasn’t able to see where the ball had finished. We had planned to play 18 holes but were too excited to share the news in the clubhouse so walked off after 9 to ring the bell in the clubhouse and buy the drinks. My next aim is to do this a third time.”

■ BATH LADIES played in a Medal last week in fine, warm conditions.

The winner of the Nett prize was Rosy Williams with a fine nett 70, just beating Louise Williamson on countback. Sandra Nott was third on nett 71.

The best gross score went to Samantha Robinson with 88, beating Nott on countback, with Alison Gardener a point back in third.

The ladies have also gained promotion to Division One of the Somerset Inter-club League. With two away matches to finish their campaign, a convincing victory against Wheathill, followed by a loss at Stockwood Vale, was enough to seal promotion.
