Juniors enjoy schools contest

-

A Bath Junior Table Tennis Tournament towards the end of February saw 105 matches played at King Edward’s between 20 players from KES, St John’s Catholic Primary, Oldfield Park Juniors, WASPS, Newbridge and Bathwick St Mary’s.

The Bath & District Table Tennis League supplied umpires Ken, Ray, Martin, Dennis and Nigel who were thanked for their efforts.

In the Years 3-5, players had two rounds of pool matches followed by a knockout round. An all KES final saw Rory overcome Felix, with Otto (Bathwick) and Ayan (KES) were runners-up. Henry (St John’s), Samuel (WASPS), Amelia (KES) and Danny (KES) were fifth, with Stanley (St John’s), Joshua (KES) and William (KES) joint-ninth.

In the Year 6 tournament, all players played a round-robin of eight matches each. Every player won at least one game, while Tristan (KES) emerged undefeated with eight victories. Thomas (St John’s) was second with six ahead of Jack (WASPS), Tom (Newbridge) and Louie (Newbridge) who all won five matches. Sonny (St John’s) had four and Oscar (St John’s) three, while Cephas (Oldfield) and Hanna (St John’s) both managed a win apiece.

Brendan Rouse, who helped run the day, said: “The standard of play improved as the tournaments progressed, thanks to some technique tips from the umpires.

“We will repeat this tournament next year and hope that even more schools can send players.

“Please contact me on brouse@stjohns.bathnes.sch.uk if you would like to know more.”

Everyone received a certificate, presented by KES Junior head teacher Mr Price, and lots of treats from Sandy and her catering team were enjoyed.
