A rare Czech painting by one of the most famous creators of Surrealist art has been acquired by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.

The Message of the Forest, painted by Toyen (born Marie Cˇermínová) in 1936, depicts a blue, one-footed bird clutching a severed head, and is the first of the artist’s works to enter a UK public collection.
