This tiny lead bot­tle is an English Chris­tian’s pil­grim sou­venir, con­tain­ing a tiny bit of oil or wa­ter poured over relics in Jerusalem. “It was in­tended as a re­minder that the pil­grim was once very close to the divine,” says Neil MacGregor. “Yet this pur­suit of ho­li­ness was fraught with risks: medieval pil­grims faced a real dan­ger of be­ing robbed, mur­dered or dy­ing of dis­ease.”
