What was done after Dunkirk?

-

Regarding the question of what happened to the Dunkirk evacuees after they returned to Britain ( Q&A, May), in fact many of them did not go directly to bases. During the evacuation it was decided that some would be dispersed to cities and billeted in private houses. Officers asked householders in selected streets whether they had a spare bed, and those who did were expected to take one or two soldiers. Some houses were exempt, such as those where an occupant had an infectious disease, or which were occupied by single old people.

I remember seeing a column of men marching down the road where I lived, and watching one or two being allocated to each house with space to take them. Two had to share a bed in our house. I think they went to the local school for their meals, and were kept occupied during the day. They stayed for about a week and then disappeared. This must have happened in various towns and cities.
