Dig uncovers ancient mosaic
Surveyors working on a vineyard in northern Italy have unearthed a beautifully preserved and intricately patterned Roman mosaic floor thought to date from the third century AD. Experts have long believed that the hills of the commune of Negrar di Valpolicella, near Verona, were the site of an ancient Roman villa, traces of which were first found in 1922. The most recent excavations have also uncovered portions of the villa’s foundations, and work is now under way to gradually reveal the rest of the site.
