Take five
Five unjustly neglected female composers are at the heart of a new collaborative recording project between BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). A work by each composer will recorded for the first time by the BBC orchestras and choirs and premiered on Radio 3 to celebrate International Women’s Day next year (8 March). The five chosen composers are: Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), a Russian pianist who taught Stravinsky; the Austrian keyboard virtuoso Marianna Martines (1744-1813); the African-american symphonist Florence B Price (1887-1953); Augusta Holmès (1847-1903), a French-irish writer of large-scale operas; and Austrian composer Johanna Müller-hermann (1868-1941).
