Rainer Kussmaul

(born 1946) had a prestigious career as a Baroque violinist and teacher before being appointed first concertmaster at the Berlin Philharmonic during Claudio Abbado’s tenure as principal conductor. He was a founding member of the Berlin Baroque Soloists and continued to serve as its artistic director long after he left Berlin.
