As the Royal Opera House gets ready for next month’s Otello starring tenor Jonas Kaufmann, it limbers up with a revival of Nicholas Hytner’s 2008 staging of another Verdian landmark: Don Carlo. The previous outing featured Kaufmann in the title role but this time it’s the turn of tenor Bryan Hymel to sing Don Carlo, with soprano Krassimira Stoyanova as Elizabeth and bass Ildar Abdrazakov as Philip. It’s conducted by Bertrand de Billy who also presides over L’elisir d’amore at the end of the month.
