FROM 13-15 OC­TO­BER, Ra­dio 3 and the Well­come Col­lec­tion are team­ing up for ‘Why Mu­sic?’, a week­end of lec­tures, dis­cus­sions and per­for­mances broad­cast from the Well­come Col­lec­tion in Lon­don. This year, mu­sic’s dra­matic im­pact on mem­ory and the mind will be the fo­cus dur­ing the week­end, with pro­grammes on how per­form­ers mem­o­rise scores, Tom Ser­vice’s ex­plo­ration of ‘ear­worms’ in his Sun­day pro­gramme, The Lis­ten­ing Ser­vice and, in The Early Mu­sic Show, a look at how mu­sic helped monks remember huge swathes of prayer. Les­ley Gar­rett will choose a se­lec­tion of mu­sic re­call­ing peo­ple and places and there will be a per­for­mance by Singing with Friends, a com­mu­nity choir for fam­i­lies liv­ing with de­men­tia. Igor Le­vit will play Beethoven’s Di­a­bel­lis and the Aurora Orches­tra will per­form Mozart’s Sym­phony No. 40 – and much more…
