I’m a big Brahms fan, and Günter Wand conducting his symphonies (on RCA) is on my player every other day. I could cite numerous examples throughout the four works where Wand just seems to get it right – not least the rhythmic vitality of the First Symphony’s first subject, which immediately struck me – but there is a particular moment at the end of the recapitulation in the Third Symphony’s first movement where he never fails to bring a lump to my throat.
