HI-RES PLAYERS – A QUICK GUIDE
Why bother?
Hi-res is about revealing detail, from experiencing the scale of an orchestra to the humming of a pianist and the squeaking frets on a guitar. It’s not for everyone, but do download a couple of tracks in the best resolution to see what the fuss is about.
Types of file:
As a basic guide, Cd-quality files are listed as 16-bit/44.1khz, whereas hi-res audio is typically 24-bit, with a sampling frequency of 88.2khz or higher. There are many different file types including DSD,
FLAC, MQA, but increasingly both albums and equipment will carry a Hi-res Audio logo.
Where to buy?
hdtracks.com – the world’s largest selection of hi-res audio downloads; primephonic.com – an expansive selection of classical music, including BBC Music Mag Awards playlists; itrax.com – despite the site’s dated look, you can download all the greats in your choice of hi-res file.
