Cantata for soprano, choir and three lions
As England went into football hysteria during the World Cup, a wave of homespun performances of ‘Football’s Coming Home’ broke out across the country – from the classical music world alone, Norwich Cathedral Choir and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber were among those to have put their own arrangements online. Surely, though, the moment demands the bigger treatment? A Three Lions cantata, perhaps? With Gareth Southgate having demonstrated his musical talent by conducting the fans in a post-match sing-a-long in Russia, the England manager is a shoo-in for one of the parts.
So, come on, composers. Someone needs to make this happen.
