The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition
The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition, organised every five years by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, ranks among the most prestigious of its kind in the world. It is known for its high standard, exacting repertoire, superb prizes and prestigious Jury. The eighth Mirjam Helin Competition will again be bringing the best young vocal talents to Helsinki on May 20–29, 2019.
The Mirjam Helin Competition is intended for young singers with experience and maturity. Many of its former prizewinners, such as Olaf Bär, Elīna Garanča, René Pape and Julia Lezhneva, have later risen to the top of the world of singing.
The competition is known for demanding a broad repertoire (Baroque music, Lied, opera) while at the same time allowing great liberty in the choice of music. The programme does not include any obligatory compositions or composers. There are two categories, one for women and one for men. Women born in or after 1989 and men born in or after 1987 are eligible to participate, regardless of nationality.
Competitors are o#ered benefits including free accommodation with private families, a daily allowance and free travel on public transport in Helsinki.
The finalists will be accompanied by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu. A total of €173,000 will be awarded in prizes, along with several engagement prizes.
The Mirjam Helin Competition will be given extensive media coverage by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) and all the rounds will be streamed and broadcast live on radio and TV.
