We reveal who’s recording what, and where…

London-based string group 12 Ensemble is the first signing for a new label called Sancho Panza Recordings, the brainchild of artist manager Steve Abbott. While classical music will be a core focus for the label’s output, it will specialise specifically in contemporary music that represents the times we live in. The signing coincides with the ensemble’s first UK tour and, of course, its debut album.

Manchester Camerata is in the studio for Chandos ahead of the first concert of its new 2018/19 season and a five-date tour in China. The recording, at Stoller Hall, marks the beginning of a five-year performance and recording project that will take in all of Mozart’s piano concertos.

Decca is seemingly on a mission to gather together the cream of young classical recording artists. Following the signings of cellist Sheku Kanneh-mason and saxophonist Jess Gillam comes the news that Miloš Karadaglić is to join the fold. The popular guitarist has enjoyed huge success with its sister label Deutsche Grammophon, so Decca is no doubt hoping to replicate that. Karadaglić is said to be looking forward to getting back into the studio to begin work on the first release, due sometime in 2019.

Acclaimed US tenor Michael Fabiano has just signed an exclusive contract with Pentatone. The full breadth of the singer’s repertoire will be covered across several releases; and kicking things off is a collection of arias by Verdi and Donizetti in 2019, featuring the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Enrique Mazzola.

Violist Maxim Rysanov will direct and perform Vasks’s Viola Concerto and Symphony for Strings with the Riga Sinfonietta for a new BIS Records recording in October, while violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing is scheduled to record works for violin and orchestra by Tan Dun in Oslo.
