Under chief conductor Vasily Petrenko, Britain’s oldest orchestra presents a season rich in diversity and excitement, from the complete Brahms symphonies to new works by today’s leading composers
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2018/19 season features a dynamic and diverse range of music, with acclaimed soloists, premieres and commissions.
The 13th season under chief conductor
Vasily Petrenko, and the orchestra’s 178th season since its founding in 1840, includes compelling music from across the repertoire. Petrenko himself will conduct and introduce the complete Brahms symphonies as well as the German Requiem.
2019 also marks the tenth year of Liverpool Philharmonic’s ground-breaking
In Harmony programme, which uses orchestral music-making to improve the health, education and aspirations of children in Everton. A celebration weekend will take place in March, featuring a concert performed by the orchestra with trumpeter Pacho Flores. Artists in residence this season include dynamic piano duo Anderson & Roe and award-winning harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani. Cellist Sheku Kanneh-mason, the first ever young artist in residence, will perform with the orchestra and a recital with his sister, Isata Kanneh-mason.
In Andrew Manze’s first season as the orchestra’s principal guest conductor, he will complete the final instalment of Vaughan Williams’s symphonies with the orchestra, as well as conducting Sheku Kanneh-mason in Elgar’s Cello Concerto and presenting Benjamin Britten’s landmark War Requiem at Liverpool Cathedral to mark the centenary of the end of World War I.
Continuing its lead as one of the UK’S most prolific commissioners and performers of new music, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform several commissions and premieres this season from composers including Ian Bell, Evangelinegrace Mason, Mark-anthony Turnage, Claudia Montero, Elena Kats-chernin and composer in association Gary Carpenter.
