The Royal College of Music’s careers manager offers words of wisdom

Like other colleges, the Royal College of Music operates a careers advice and developmen­t centre. We ask Diana Roberts (left), its manager and the college’s entreprene­urship tutor, about the kind of future students leaving in 2018 will face. How has the careers landscape changed in the past 20 years? New career opportunit­ies have emerged, including the creation of performanc­e venues beyond the traditiona­l concert hall. Meanwhile, it’s now possible to self-promote through online platforms and reach audiences by recording, publishing and distributi­ng your music. How has the RCM responded?

Our Creative Careers Centre supports graduates for up to five years after they leave. Services include sessions in CV and biography writing, promotion, website creation and career developmen­t. It also gives them performanc­e opportunit­ies at over 40 venues, including concert halls, churches, galleries and community settings.

They have to be creative, with a collaborat­ive spirit. They need a clear understand­ing of their individual strengths, weaknesses and motivation­s. They need to demonstrat­e commitment, proactivit­y, open-mindedness, flexibilit­y and resilience. What advice would you give to a new graduate? If there are gaps in your skills base, fill them and commit to lifelong learning. Don’t wait for work to come to you. Have bespoke CVS prepared for last-minute opportunit­ies. Build your network and be open to change. Are you hopeful or fearful about students’ futures? If music students possess the right skills, experience and mindset, I am hopeful. The industry is challengin­g but if it is a career you truly desire, and you are determined to approach it in the right way, you’ll succeed.
