We reveal who’s recording what, and where…
Cala Records has embarked on a collaboration with Signum Classics.
Founded in 1990, Cala has an impressive back catalogue of releases, including those in its popular ‘New York Legends’ and ‘London Sound’ series. All its future recordings (and reissues) will be released as Cala Signum.
Nonesuch and New Amsterdam Records also join forces this year to release around three albums per year. The partnership reflects the New York-based labels’ shared values, supporting the new work of several generations of American composers. The first releases will be by composers Caroline Shaw, William Brittelle and Daniel Wohl.
Following the success of their recording of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas Nos 6 and 9, violinist James Ehnes and pianist Andrew Armstrong return to the studio to capture more of the master’s works for Onyx Records. In March they record Nos 8 and 10 (which join a previously recorded Fi h Sonata on disc), then the following month they record Nos 1, 2 and 3.
Deutsche Grammophon has just announced the signing of Norwegian violinist Mari Samuelsen. A new album, recorded with Jonathan Stockhammer and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, features music by JS Bach, Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Brian Eno and Peter Gregson and will be released in the summer. The signing was marked with the release of a single, November, by Max Richter.
Decca Eloquence celerates its 20th anniversary this year, and to mark its twodecade milestone a series of boxed collections will be released. They include recordings by pianists Eduardo del Pueyo and Moura Lympany, the Vienna Philharmonic’s complete Bruckner cycle, Kurt Masur’s Brahms cycle with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, not to mention the complete Philips, Decca, DG and Accord recordings made by conductor Charles Munch.
