Rising Stars
Three to look out for…
Patrick Terry Countertenor
Born: Janesville, Wisconsin, US
Career highlight: Stepping into the role of Rosencrantz on Glyndebourne’s tour of Brett Dean’s Hamlet.
I wasn’t even covering the role, so it was a challenge and a huge surprise. The day after, I was accepted on the Jette Parker Young Artist programme, so it was a pretty exciting week.
Musical hero: The real heroes of classical music are people who work with music in local communities. I did a family concert with soprano and animateur Isabelle Adams and Wigmore Hall’s programme manager Ellie Cowan – those ladies are totally heroic. Dream concert: That would be a song recital at Wigmore Hall.
Simone Rubino Percussionist
Born: Turin, Italy
Career highlight: My solo concert with the Vienna Philharmonic in Lucerne in 2016 with the fantastic Tugan Sokhiev conducting. It’s important for the development of percussion as a solo instrument for the big orchestras to perform with percussionists and commission new pieces for the percussion repertoire.
Musical hero: Conductor Gustavo Dudamel is a positive and charismatic influencer, not just in the classical music scene but in the whole world.
Dream concert: To play in a stadium for more than 50,000 with people listening worldwide, and so bringing people together with classical music.
Maya Youssef Qanan player
Born: Damascus, Syria Career highlight: Playing at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2014 and being told by a Syrian woman that my music kept her going.
Musical hero: I have loved listening to JS Bach’s chamber and solo instrument works since I was a child. It used to put me in a lovely daydreaming state. Dream concert: That would be playing with those who have had a massive influence on me as a musician and composer: jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek, sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, singer and composer Aziza Mustafa Zadeh and drummer Magnus Öström.
