Three to look out for…
Maria Milstein Violinist
Born: Moscow, Russia Career highlight: Collaborating with my sister Nathalia, a pianist, on our second album dedicated to Ravel has been a constant source of joy. My debut with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko was also exciting.
Musical hero: One of my earliest memories is listening to Yehudi Menuhin recordings – he remains one of my favourite musicians. But so are Fritz Kreisler, Joseph Szigeti, Jacques Thibaud, Pablo Casals and many more. I admire their ability to sing on their instrument and express the music in the most human way.
Dream concert: That would be one in which the only focus is the music performed and the message it passes on.
Robert Reid Allan Composer
Born: Glasgow, Scotland Career highlight:
Being the apprentice composer-in-residence at Birmingham Contemporary Music Group was an incredible opportunity to make music with some of the UK’S best musicians in a supportive environment while still retaining creative autonomy.
Musical hero: Rebecca Saunders’s music is focused, detailed, nuanced and visceral, and she matches this with a warm heart and generosity towards young composers.
Dream concert: To collaborate with incredible artists across other disciplines and from history, such as Arthur Rimbaud, Egon Schiele or Whitney Houston. Valentine Michaud Saxophonist Born: Paris, France Career highlight: My debut concert at the Lucerne Festival with the pianist Akvilé Sileikaité was a truly intense musical moment! Musical hero: Barbara Hannigan is so committed to contemporary music and the development of young musicians. She is an inspiring performer across so many disciplines.
Dream concert: I’d like to do a performance involving musicians, dancers, comedians, visual artists and drama – something like an opera, but for the saxophone. The audience could enter a whole new world and have a complete artistic experience.
