In the June issue I enjoyed reading about the music that signified the plague. The piece didn’t reference Cui’s brief, and pretty much unknown opera,
A Feast in the Time of Plague. Rather than just a curiosity piece, it is actually somewhat relevant and poignant in this current pandemic and has some beautiful arias. But what struck me most on my recent re-listening was the ironic manner in which the omnipresent presence of death is contrasted with the celebratory feast honouring a recently dead friend.
