PARROTS OF THE WILD
University of California Press
Meticulously researched and rich in detail, this beautifully produced book presents a vivid and compelling overview of one of the world’s most fascinating bird families, and combines rigour and readability. Having researched wild parrots myself, I was struck by how much our knowledge has progressed during the past 15 years or so – for example we now know that there is only one truly fruiteating species (Pesquet’s parrot). Many recent field studies are covered making this a fully up-to-date and comprehensive review. Not to be missed. Sean B Carroll is a molecular biologist, but his book is as much about ecology as it is about biochemistry. The Serengeti Rules explores how our unravelling of the rules that govern biology at all scales has enabled us to manipulate the world to our advantage – and sometimes our peril, and how the insights gleaned from a century of biomedical successes can inform our efforts to tackle environmental challenges. Carroll’s gripping accounts of the human and scientific stories behind key biological breakthroughs are interweaved with his own adventures in Africa. The result is thrilling. We commissioned 26 chapters from more than 30 women around the world to give the reader a wide range of perspectives and ideas. The contributors include leaders in business, politics, the media, activist networks, charities and researchers. They all see vital connections between issues affecting the environment, economic development, social justice and women’s rights.
Why are women so crucial to saving the planet?
All over the world, women are being held back from playing their part in bringing about change. Given the scale of the challenges ahead – such as reversing declines in wildlife and tackling sexes should be involved in making those decisions.
Which contributor has influenced you the most?
That’s a difficult question – I’ve learned so much from all of the contributors in different ways. If I had to choose one, it would be the MP Caroline Lucas. I’ve been inspired by her values, her personality and her leadership for many years, and it’s great to see her making an impact on Westminster politics.
