HUMPBACK HOTSPOTS
To see humpbacks around Britain and Ireland, narrow the odds by focusing on these areas. All often support dense aggregations of sprats, herrings or mackerel.
HEBRIDES
The waters off Tiumpan Head on the Isle of Lewis, and between Skye and Gairloch, can be very fruitful for cetaceans large and small.
SOUTHERN IRELAND
Rich hunting for humpback, fin and minke whales and several dolphin species. Fin whales peak in October and November.
SHETLAND
Sightings annual, having increased in recent years. Most are in midwinter but summer reports are on the rise too. Also a hotspot for orcas.
OUTER MORAY FIRTH & EAST GRAMPIAN
Humpbacks are just one of the species often seen here: also watch for fin and sperm whales, orcas and smaller cetaceans.
YORKSHIRE’S NORTH COAST
A relatively new hotspot, with a recent increase in sightings off Whitby. Also look for minke and fin whales, dolphins and porpoises.
CELTIC DEEP
Humpbacks and fin whales often patrol this highly productive deep water, a proposed Marine Conservation Zone.
