Toad Trek

- Suzanne Coleman, via Twitter jpeg

Spring’s pale finger Reaches down To stir cold blood to life And muddy brown Drawn from the earth They rise as one. Their baleful eyes are turned towards their place of birth And step by step the memories of a former life grow strong. Compelled by nature’s force to overcome all odds Except for one: The solid metal stream that flows along Where journey ends for some before it’s scarce begun. Now countless sightless eyes along the way Gaze up at signs that say Look out for toads.
