Presenter Gordon Buchanan is off on yet another wild adventure this winter – this time to Finland, to spend time with a family of Sami reindeer herders as well as fulfil his dream of filming the Northern Lights. The Scot will learn how the Sami survive the freezing conditions before travelling by sled and on foot into the wilderness to seek out the aurora borealis. "The Northern Lights are often looked at with awe, but few people have a clear understanding of what they actually are," says producer-director Anwar Mamon. "We want viewers to appreciate the phenomenon with more depth – through Sami folklore and Gordon’s own observations, and by unpicking the science behind the spectacle: how fast the light is travelling, for instance, and why the light glows green.”
