Pecking order

- Martin Knight, via email

We feed hedgehogs in our Norfolk garden and occasionally two may be present at the food bowl at the same time. The slightly larger individual usually shoulder barges the slightly smaller one and positions itself between it and the food bowl. The smaller hog responds by adopting a hunched up, spines up, chin-in position, and waits until the larger one has finished and moved off before it continues to feed. We presume this demonstrates a typical dominance hierarchy in hedgehogs.
