Feline find
In April last year, my wife and I were on holiday in South Carolina, US, staying at a villa on a sports complex on Kiawah Island. One evening after a drink we returned to the villa in darkness, and there on the porch was a relaxed young male bobcat ( below) with a squirrel in its mouth!
I quickly dashed upstairs to get my camera, and was amazed that when I returned, it had hardly moved! I reported the sighting to the Kiawah Biological Station the following day, who said that bobcats are widespread on the island but very difficult to see and I was indeed very lucky. The encounter truly made my holiday – not even a couple of birds on the adjoining golf course came close.
