THE KIT

-

For inveterate pond watchers, wellies should be an essential prerequisite. Binoculars will also help clinch the identification of tricky damselflies. For those keen on getting closer to life below the surface, a pond dipping net is crucial. A white plastic sampling tray (add clean pond water to it beforehand) will also enable you to study any creatures swept up in your net.

In a vibrant pond, a wide array of aquatic life will quickly accumulate in your sampling tray. The Field Studies Council has an excellent fold-out, waterproof chart called Freshwater Name Trail, which can help you to identify your catch. If it’s newts you’re after, head torches are effective at highlighting their amorous activities during the breeding season.
