Amazing wildlife encounters
In late June 2017, I flew from Seattle to Los Angeles and drove to Davis City with a friend to see and photograph burrowing owls. The adorable species can be difficult to find because they are so small but fortunately we spotted this individual perched on a conifer. I first encountered a burrowing owl in 2016 and was very excited to see one again. Using a zoom lens I took this picture in early morning light as the bird stared at us with its piercing yellow eyes. When my family and I had a holiday in Pakistan, I managed to fit in some birding. This was my first sighting of a blue-tailed bee-eater, and I was thrilled to capture it with a blue pansy butterfly. Aamir Mughal, Wellingborough, UK
