ISLE OF SARK
This small car-free island, nestled between England and France, is a true walker’s paradise. Measuring only 3.5miles long by 1.5 miles wide, Sark may be small but it is big on breathtaking scenery. Here you will find seemingly endless walking trails covering the whole island, with stunning panoramic sea views along the way.
The walking trails cross over big open headlands, meander through lush wooded valleys and wind down to pretty little bays or beautiful sandy beaches. In Spring, the paths are lined with pastel coloured wild flowers, whilst in Autumn, the burnt orange of the ferns against the steely blue sea is most striking. Many of the walking routes are available to download, as well as pick up in the Visitor Centre, making exploring the island on foot easy and accessible.
The lack of cars sets us apart from many other walking destinations. It means no traffic, no noise and no pollution as you explore. Although, you may have to navigate around a herd of sheep taking up the path or a horse and carriage when crossing the road…
Sark is not only wonderful for walking by day but also by night. Named the world’s first Dark Sky Island in 2011, visitors can enjoy the most spectacular starry night displays from anywhere on the island, including our observatory. The beauty of Sark does not end with the views either, the people are full of personality, the history is most intriguing and the local crab, lobster and ale is superb!
