CALL TO BAN DISPOSABLE BBQS

-

When will the legislators wake up and acknowledge the very real risks posed by portable one-off BBQs? These cheap, easily available cookers are a menace, especially in the hands of irresponsible and immature individuals.

Every year we see news reports of major fires in the countryside, many a direct result of people using these items. When events get out of control they represent a serious risk to human life, property and the environment. They also incur considerable costs, both direct and indirect, which must run into millions of pounds per annum. They cause destruction to our countryside and the delicate environment – many such places are fragile habitats of national and international importance. It takes years for such habitats to fully recover, just so a minority of people can barbeque sausages for a few minutes. Defra, the fire service, nature conservation groups and councils must have records of the associated expenses incurred.

For years, various Governments have rightly been encouraging people to visit the outdoors for fresh air and exercise. The sight of burnt acreage stretching as far as the eye can see is likely to put people off, however, and is therefore counterproductive to the Government’s intentions.

Hearsay reports suggest these BBQs are also a hazard on beaches when discarded and buried while still alight. The solution is simple: fast-track legislation to prohibit their sale and use. The pros for such action well outweigh the cons of banning a convenience product. If any readers support a ban, then please write to your local MP and the secretary of state for Defra.
