Security alert as gas canister device is left on road side verge

- BY STAFF REPORTER

A ROADSIDE gas cylinder has triggered a security operation in south Armagh.

The yellow canister was discovered lying on the grass verge of Hall Road, near Lislea village yesterday.

According to an eyewitness, the Hall Road remained open to traffic throughout the afternoon despite the suspect device lying at the side of the road .

PSNI Inspector Lynne Corbett said: “We have received several reports of a suspicious item in the area and we are currently following up on these reports,”

“In the meantime, I would advise people to avoid the Hall Road area of Lislea until further guidance is given.”

In an updated Facebook post late last night, Newry and Mourne PSNI said that the road had been closed and urgently called on local residents to stay inside their homes.

“We are asking that residents of the Hall Road remain inside their houses as far as possible,” they said.

“We will endeavour to get everything back to normality as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.”
