Passenger traffic is up by 9.3% in Dublin
DUBLIN was again one of the fastest-growing large airports in Europe during October, with its passenger traffic jumping 9.3% to just under 2.5 million that month.
The airport, controlled by the DAA, has continued to experience a surge in passenger numbers this year.
It will have handled over 27m passengers in 2016, and 2017 looks set to be even busier as airlines launch new routes.
Aer Lingus will add services to Miami to its network from Dublin later next year, while Qatar Airways will inaugurate a daily service to Doha from June.
And frequencies on transat- lantic services are set to increase during the summer.
Lufthansa also confirmed yesterday that it will increase its Dublin to Munich service to a double-daily one from next March.
Releasing traffic figures yesterday, the European arm of Airports Council International said that Dublin was the second-fastest growing large airport in Europe during October.
It was beaten in its category of airports that handle more than 25m passengers a year only by Barcelona, which recorded a 10.9% increase.
Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI Europe, said that passenger numbers had picked up in October as the negative impact of terror attacks that took place earlier in the year, and the failed Turkish coup, receded. “Both the passenger and freight dynamics reflected a generally improved macro-economic environment, especially in the EU,” he said.
“However, the prospect of oil price hikes and the risk of decreasing business and consumer confidence on the back on heightened geopolitical instability may well confront us with very different traffic dynamics in the coming months.”
