a gentleman,” said Mr Logan. “I have a removal business and on Saturday I was doing a job and Ian came with me to Dublin.

“We stopped and had breakfast on the way down and then when we came back that afternoon we had a cup of tea together.

“Everything was normal, there was nothing different about him. He was chatting away on the journey, he was just himself.

“We met through Lambeg drumming and he had a lot of friends in that circle.”

Mr Logan added: “I was very fond of him and I will miss him.”

Mr Pedlow, a Ballymena native who had previously studied at the technical college in the town, lost his beloved Scottish wife Jean in 2013.

In a post on his Facebook page, dating back to February 19, 2015, he had written: “Spending today at the garden of remembrance in Scotland where I spread my young wife’s ashes two years ago. God bless xx.”

Alongside these poignant words is a photograph of a plaque which reads: “Jean Pedlow (nee Robertson) passed away 19-02-13. Always remembered by her loving husband Ian. Gone but never forgotten.”

A PSNI spokesman yesterday said that an investigation into the sudden death of Mr Pedlow was still ongoing.

Alderman Stewart McDonald said he had been speaking to Mr Pedlow while out canvassing with his party colleague and TUV leader Jim Allister last Thursday night — three days before his death.

The Ahoghill councillor said the victim was a regular visitor to the small rural village, where he had many friends.

“He was very well-known and I used to see him about the town a lot,” said Mr McDonald.

“When we saw him the other night he seemed to be in good spirits. This is an absolute tragedy and my heart goes out to his family and friends.

“It is very, very sad when something like this happens, particularly when it’s so close to home. The local community is still reeling from shock. It’s hard to believe this has happened.”

UUP councillor Colin McCusker, who knew Mr Pedlow through Lambeg drumming circles, said: “He always said hello and had a smile on his face. This is tragic news.”

Mr Pedlow is survived by his brother. No details of the funeral have been released.
