Paedophile to continue court battle

- BY ALAN ERWIN

A CONVICTED child abuser awarded heavily reduced damages for featuring on Facebook pages naming and shaming paedophiles in Northern Ireland is attempting to take his case to the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year senior judges in Belfast slashed the scale of compensation to the sex offender from £20,000 to £2,000.

Lawyers for the man, identified only as CG, believe the relevant Electronic Commerce Regulations were wrongly interpreted.

The Court of Appeal yesterday refused to certify issues of law for further consideration in London.

But CG’s representatives are now expected to petition the Supreme Court — the highest court in the land — directly for a hearing.

If they ultimately succeed, the original £20,000 pay-out could be restored.

Facebook was sued along with so-called paedophile hunter Joe McCloskey over an online forum operated by the Limavady man.
