A BELFAST bar has been crowned the best pub in Northern Ireland at the National Pub and Bar Awards.

The Northern Whig in the city’s Cathedral Quarter was the regional winner for Co Antrim and went on to take the prestigious title at the ceremony in London on Tuesday.

The bar and restaurant is part of the Horatio Group, and underwent a major £300,000 refit just last year.

Stephen Magorrian, managing director of the Horatio Group, said the company was “absolutely thrilled” with the accolade.

“This award is a huge credit to our dedicated team of 40 at the Northern Whig, who have delivered exceptional service, food and customer care since we opened the doors of the new-look Whig last May,” he added.

The five other regional winners were Denvir’s Coaching Inn, Co Down; The Corner House, Co Armagh; The Taphouse, Co Fermanagh; Dormans, Co Londonderry and Time Bar, Co Tyrone.
