Baby among three fighting for lives after horrific spate of collisions on our roads
TWO adults and a baby are in a critical condition in hospital following separate road crashes which left one woman dead.
The woman was killed and the baby injured in a three-vehicle collision on the A2 between Belfast and Bangor on Friday.
The smash happened at around 3.50pm on the busy road near the Ballyrobert junction.
A man travelling in a different car was taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald for treatment to his injuries.
On Saturday a 50-year-old woman was arrested after a pensioner was seriously injured in a two-car collision in Co Down.
The elderly woman was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she remained in critical condition last night.
The crash happened on the Scarva Road near Banbridge at 11.30am.
Meanwhile, a pedestrian was left critically injured after being struck by a car in Co Armagh on Thursday. The male victim, understood to be a foreign national, is aged in his 30s.
He was struck by a white Citreon C3 vehicle at around 9pm
while walking on the Dobbin Road.
It is believed that the driver of the car alerted the emergency services and the injured man was taken to hospital.
PSNI Inspector John Allen said the driver of the car involved was spoken to by officers at the scene. He appealed for witnesses to contact police.
Rev Roy Patton opened Ballygilbert Presbyterian church’s
doors on Friday to some of those affected by the collision near Bangor.
“We invited in some of the people who were caught up in the crash. When we noticed that the traffic had stopped in the road we realised something had happened,” he said.
“Our youth worker went out to them with cups of tea and invited some of the people into the church and gave them tea and coffee to help keep them warm.
“They were in shock. It happened very quickly for them, so it took some time for them to deal with the shock.”
North Down MLA Alan Chambers called for increased safety measures to be put in place following the tragedy.
He said: “It’s very sad to hear about the fatality and I hope that the child who was injured makes a full recovery.”
