Remembrance Sunday fracas condemned

- BY VICTORIA LEONARD

EAST Belfast residents have expressed their disappointment over an altercation which took place on Remembrance Sunday night and resulted in a number of people suffering injuries.

Detectives at Musgrave are investigating the fracas, which occurred at 11pm in the Dee Street area.

Treasurer of the Harland and Wolff Welders Football and Social Club John Davidson said that it was sad to see such an incident happen on a day of remembrance.

“Earlier in the day the club had a remembrance service and a lot of Somme Associations attended,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.

“This incident was nothing to do with the club and we don’t like having that happen on our doorstep, especially on Remembrance Sunday, a day when you should show respect.

“The club and committee are disappointed over this incident.”

Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Sonia Copeland also condemned the behaviour.

“On Remembrance Sunday we don’t want to see any altercations on the streets,” Ms Copeland said.

“It is a residential area and I would call on anyone with information to go to the police.”

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the PSNI on 101, quoting reference 547 of 13/11/17, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
