Why are unionist causes beyond the pale among so-called activist academics

-

Risteard O Ceallaigh:

Nelson, I’d keep an eye under your bed if I were you. I’ve heard that a family of Romanian Catholic academic sociologists are moving in under your bed. The official line is to bolster the ethnic diversity of Northern Ireland, but the real reason is to keep you awake at night by chanting, “A united Ireland is coming, it’s coming down the Dublin railroad track”.

Greg Ulidian:

Simply because unionism adheres to a moral and conservative principle at variance to the cultural Marxism which has gripped education and higher learning.

Kevin Connolly:

“Cultural Marxism”, Greg? I love that alt-Right phrase.

John O’Heron:

Greg Ulidian, “cultural Marxism”? Is that the one where they go to the opera and Groucho does the joke about the “sanity clause”? Sanity being completely at odds with the essence of your statement.

Bob Storey:

The writer’s rationale, as I understand it, is that there is an imbalance of political ideology among academics, which necessarily fails to provide students with the complexities and nuances of political choices. As a Lefty, I am happy with that situation, but, in fairness, you have to see the point that, without challenge and testing of ideas, university life is the poorer.

Mary Gribben:

This is a disgraceful attack on well-respected academics, who have made excellent contributions to our community.

Peter Hughes:

These crusty old dons, spreading their wild ideas of equality, climate change and evolution, will corrupt the youth of today.

Matthew Gault:

Would Nelson be writing the article if Right-wing and unionist views were over-represented? Does he actually care for the protection of diversity in academia? There are interesting questions to be asked, but Nelson doesn’t approach any of them.

Trish Kindelan:

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that a good deal of academia leans Left. It’s been that way for years. But, of course, now that means they’re obvious republicans — just for their political stance. Seems to me that the DUP are arguing about air these days. To all parties: stop bickering, throwing your toys out of the pram, and get back to work.
