Treble-chasing Mournemen now have Anderson Cup in their sights

KILKEEL will attempt to make it three trophies in one season when they take on Mossley in tomorrow evening’s Anderson Cup final at Stormont Playball (8pm).

The Mournemen already have the Kirk Cup and the Ulster Premier League titles under their belts and, after several weeks delay over an ineligibility issue, they are hoping to complete the treble in what is their most successful season in their history.

Their strength lies in the amount of players who regularly feature among goals — David Finlay, David Rae, Luke Russell, Johnny Aiken, Eddie Agnew and William Annett have scored 66 goals between them this season.

Mossley, on the other hand, were beaten by Instonians in the semi-finals but were re-instated when the Shaw’s Bridge club were dismissed over inadvertently playing what was deemed an ineligible player.

The Newtownabbey side have yet to beat Kilkeel, having drawn 4-4 in the Kirk Cup pool stages and then drawing 3-3 and losing 4-1 in the league campaign.

But they have a useful side, with Jordan Robinson their top scorer with 33 goals and a potential match winner.

Much will depend on what team hits the ground running, bearing in mind that their last matches were last month.

The final clashes with the start of the Fifa World Cup and US Open golf, but a good crowd is still expected.
