Boy accused of assault on man to remain in custody

DUNGANNON Magistrates Court has been told a child accused of violent conduct remains in custody after efforts to obtain alternative accommodation failed.

The child, who cannot be identified due to his age, is accused of assaulting a male and damaging property, including internal doors and a laptop computer, on July 4.

He wa s a r r e s t e d a n d brought to court, where bail was agreed, but on the strict condition he was released to reside at an address approved by Social Services.

The boy is banned from contacting the alleged victim or entering the area of his home.

During a remand hearing by video-link yesterday, the boy’s solicitor said his social worker is continuing to seek a suitable address. Daily checks are being made with foster carers and efforts are also under way regarding supported housing.

However, the solicitor advised: “Nothing to date has become available from either option.”

District Judge John Meehan ruled the matter must be kept under review, with urgent emphasis on the relevant Health and Social Care Trust finding suitable accommodation.

The case i s t o be mentioned again next week. The boy, meanwhile, remains in custody.
