Student Eve talks her way into China trip

A STUDENT has won a UK-wide Mandarin Chinese speaking competitio­n.

Eve Flood from Thornhill College scooped the Beginners’ prize in the HSBC British Council Mandarin Speaking Competitio­n in London. Patrick Murray from Rathmore Grammar in Belfast came second in the same category.

Eve, who’s been learning Mandarin for only a year, faced competitio­n from across the UK, winning a week-long trip to Beijing in China.

Eve said: “My parents think it’s fantastic that I’ve won, they don’t know much about Mandarin but they have been very encouragin­g and have instilled a lot of confidence in me.”
