Travel: Dorset drama
We’re all gripped by the latest series of hit detective show Broadchurch, but the striking locations along the coastline are just as compelling...
TRAVEL SNAPSHOT
When the first series of Broadchurch debuted on our screens in 2013, people were talking about the scenery almost as much as the storyline. That’s because it was largely filmed around West Bay, one of the prettiest fishing towns in Dorset, on what’s known as the Jurassic Coast. This coastline is distinguished by dramatic cliffs – some of which are over 180 million years old – lined with sandy beaches, interesting rock formations and cute coves. West Bay, also known as Bridport Harbour, is the perfect place to see most of the show’s filming locations.
INSIDER’S GUIDE
To see the main places in the drama, follow the Broadchurch walking trail (find it at visit-dorset.com). You’ll spot the blue beach huts where DI Alec Hardy lived in series two, the police station (which is actually a block of flats called the Folly), the wooden East Pier, and the Sea Brigade Hall (actually an old Methodist church). Too much drama? Family attractions nearby include Monkey World (monkeyworld.org), an ape rescue centre, and Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park (visitsealife.com).
